What to Do if the Defense Opponent Does Not Come?

Of course, the opponent must be on the defense itself. This is a prerequisite. Of course, there are different cases that can happen to an opponent:

  1. The presence of a disease;

  2. Vacation or business trip;

  3. Absence for a good reason.

If the opponent's response was positive, then, in this case, the defense can be carried out without it. Just in this case, the opponent's review is read from beginning to end with the entire commission. If a doctoral dissertation is being defended, then at the defense itself there should be about 2-3 opponents and one more remotely (via remote communication, audio and video broadcasting).

Another case is when the opponent writes a negative review. Here things are quite different. If the opponent cannot be on defense, then it is postponed for up to 6 months. This term is decided by the council. The opponent may also not come for the second time, and this is already bad for the opponent himself, because he will be replaced. Perhaps, after the replacement, the opponent will be very loyal and write a more or less good review.

Reading reviews in the dissertation defense procedure

The defender makes a report on scientific work, after which he answers a number of questions asked. It is worth noting that the format of the questions is not always oral, and the speaker may also receive written questions. The chairman of the council determines the order in which the speaker answers these questions.

Report on your work

After all this celebration, the word is passed to the supervisor or science consultant. After that, the institution will announce the result of the defense - this is done out loud so that everyone is notified about it. After that, all other reviews will be read. Of course, if there are too many reviews, the council secretary can take a quick look at the reviews and skim through them, thus reducing the amount of time wasted. But this applies only to positive reviews, all negative and negative comments will be voiced from beginning to end, without fast forwarding time.

After all these procedures, the applicant responds to these comments, and also answers questions from opponents. In the procedure for answering questions from opponents, a discussion may begin, so the process may take a little longer, but there are frequent cases when the dissertator answers all the questions at once, thereby reducing the time for everyone. After that, this discussion, and at all, can go to all participants in the defense.
